What was the big bright star/planet in the sky tonight?

I took my laptop outside this evening and as the dark started to settle in, I noticed this big bright star/planet in the sky. Did anyone else see it? I thought it was Venus, but then it started to move down and at some point I lost sight of it. Was it a satelite?!
